The finale for "The Affair" season 2 was aired last Dec. 20, and now viewers understand the mystery behind the death of Scotty Lockhart. New episodes are expected to air by 2016.

As the Solloways were conversing during a quick drive, Helen Solloway (Maura Tierney) took her eyes off the road when her ex-husband Noah tried to reach for her hand. It was then that the car plowed into Scotty, instantly killing him.

The season ends with Noah taking responsibility for Scotty's death, but that's not the end of the story. Variety has reported that Showtime will be renewing "Affair" for a third season, and though there is no official news on an actual launch date, "The Affair" fans can expect it to happen anytime in 2016.

According to Bustle, the wait might actually be a long one considering that Seasons 1 and 2 were both released on an October, and there is reason to believe that season 3 will be released on October 2016 as well.

"The Affair" creator Sarah Treem said in an interview with Elle that the tone for season 3 will change, but there was no specific details divulged as to how that would be so. "I think the second season is going to be darker in tone, and tighter. And the third season changes again." Trees said to Elle. "I will be sad if we don't get a third because I don't think it quite pays off until the third season."

The series follows the storyline of the extra-martial relationship between Noah Solloway and Alison Lockhart, and the effect it has on both their marriages. The show has had a good amount of success with critics as Rotten Tomatoes gives the drama a score of 95 percent as a consensus of scores given by 80 critics.

"The Affair" was first aired on Oct. 12, 2014.
