There has been a petition from "Penny Dreadful" fans for Netflix to pick up and continue the fourth installment of the series, but series showrunners have given their final word – season 4 of "Penny Dreadful" will not happen.

The Showtime series "Penny Dreadful" aired the season finale of its third and final season last June titled, "The Blessed Dark." The two-hour finale closed with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) sacrificing herself, shot by Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), to save the world from Dracula and his night creatures from consuming it. "The End" was displayed at the end of the episode, signaling the end of the "Penny Dreadful" series for good.

Fans of the show refused to accept that "Penny Dreadful" has been discontinued, so a petition in Change.org was created to convince Netflix to buy the series and pick up a fourth season. Mario Meroni, the creator of the petition, described "Penny Dreadful" as high quality, with an "original plot and brilliant universe of characters."

Despite the petition and its current 14,655 supporters, John Logan has confirmed that season 4 of "Penny Dreadful" is far from happening.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Logan said "I realized that's where the third season was going to head. It was going to head to Vanessa sacrificing herself and reuniting with God." Now that Vanessa has restored her faith and reunited with God, the story of "Penny Dreadful" has fulfilled its purpose, said Logan.

At the 2016 Television's Critic Association summer press tour, Showtime programming president Gary Levine and Showtime CEO David Nevins revealed that they have attempted multiple times to continue "Penny Dreadful," without the presence of the main character, Vanessa, and possibly without Logan as well.

"I think Logan always envisioned a three-season arc for her and that character. I was trying to keep open the possibility of going beyond, but as we were going into that final season, it became clear that the combination of that character and John as a writer were the heart of the show, so it seemed like it was going to be foolhardy to continue going," explained Nevins.
