Nintendo has announced that they will be discontinuing the NES Classic Edition, but this might not be implemented worldwide yet. Meanwhile, a mini SNES Classic Edition is already under development, and it is anticipated to be released this December.

The popular plug-and-play console of Nintendo, the NES Classic Edtion, has been discontinued by the company and remaining stocks of the game console will be shipped out to stores this April.

A representative of Nintendo shared with IGN: "Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability. We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product."

However, Polygon confirmed from the Japanese website of Nintendo that the discontinuation of the Famicom Classic Edition, the Japanese model of the NES Classic, may not be definite.

"When production is being resumed, we will tell you on our website," the post read.

This indicates that the discontinuation might not be happening worldwide since Nintendo still has not confirmed it.

Meanwhile, a Nintendo Mini SNES is reportedly in development and will hit stores this coming Christmas season.

Eurogamer confirmed with a source close to the company that the Mini Super Nintendo Entertainment System might be the reason why the NES Classic Edition has been discontinued. The NES Classic was not intended to be a sustained gaming console, but it created a big profit for Nintendo. However, the company chose to pour their efforts into the Mini SNES.

The anticipated Nintendo Mini SNES is expected to have better software than the Classic NES and to be compatible with even more classic games.

The new Nintendo Mini SNES is anticipated to be released this December.
