iMac 2017 release date, specs rumors: hardware that protects data from radioactive decay among rumored features

Apple is keeping quiet about the new features that they will be developing for the new iMac, which is expected to come out this year. Meanwhile, one of the speculated features of the iMac is an ECC RAM that protects data from radioactive decay.

There has been little news from Apple about the next generations of their Mac Pro and iMac lineups. However, recently, the company called several journalists from different publications to announce their work on the two series.

The conference was hosted by Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, TechCrunch confirmed. While Schiller talked a lot about what to expect from the upcoming Mac Pro, the company is keeping tight-lipped about the rumored iMac update.

The point that Schiller focused on about the iMac was that a portion of its customers was coming from the Mac Pro market. Because they want to avoid this shift in customers, they are completely rethinking the Mac Pro to address shortcomings that may have caused its users to switch to the iMac.

"So many of our customers were moving to iMac that we saw a path to address many, many more of those that were finding themselves limited by Mac Pro through a next generation iMac... And really put a lot of our energy behind that. [But,] while that [upgraded iMac] system is going to be fantastic for a huge number of customers — we want to do more," explained Schiller.

Although Apple is keeping mum about the iMac's new features, there are already speculations on what the device will carry. One of these speculations suggests that the iMac will have a new server-grade hardware — an error correcting code (ECC) RAM.

According to Digital Trends, the ECC RAM is supposed to protect the device's data from radioactive decay, electrical interference, and even cosmic rays.

Apple's new iMac is expected to be launched in the second half of 2017.
