The third and final film of "Guardians of the Galaxy" franchise will bring an end to the stories of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and the rest of the Guardians, while jumpstarting new adventures for both old and incoming characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, director James Gunn has confirmed his return for the third sequel.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" only recently hit theaters last April, yet news about the third sequel has already been circulating the web.

Director of both the first and second films, Gunn confirms on Facebook that he will be returning to direct the third and final sequel of "Guardians of the Galaxy."

"Yes, I'm returning to write and direct 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.' ... Like in both 'Vol. 1' and 'Vol. 2,' we will work on creating the story that goes beyond what you expect," the post reads.

Gunn also confirms that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be the last of its franchise. At the same time, it will also serve as the catalyst that will create new stories for old and incoming superheroes of Marvel.

"It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond," Gunn confirms.

The director adds that he will be working with Marvel president Kevin Feige and the rest of the team to create continuing stories for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although Gunn has yet to confirm when he will begin working on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," he may have teased a release date in another post addressed to the fans of the film.

While Gunn shows his appreciation to everyone who has given him support in the past three years, the director adds, "and I'll continue being here with you over the next three years as we create 'Vol. 3.'"

According to reports, a 2020 release date is aligned with the upcoming "Avengers 4," which confirms that "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" will be the catalyst to the new storyline of the MCU.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is anticipated to premiere in 2020.
