'Assassin's Creed' 2016 movie release date news, plot updates: Movie has 2 hour running time; Fassbender and Macbeth director reunited

Assassin's Creed, the movie, will hit the big screen on December 21. 20th Century Fox

The best-selling game franchise "Assassin's Creed" is getting itself a movie adaptation featuring actor Michael Fassbender. Helmed by Macbeth director Justin Kurzel, the movie is said to feature action packed scenes just like the ones found in the successful game franchise.

The "Assassin's Creed" movie does not stray too far from the game's plot. The movie tells the story of the "Assassin's Creed" brotherhood that is out to save the world by using a unique technology that allows them to relive the lives of their ancestors.

The movie features Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), a man who has made a name for himself as a criminal for hire. Because of this, Lynch was abducted by Abstergo, the company who is also responsible for his faked death, to make him relive the memories of his ancestors who lived during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.

Lynch will do this by using the Animus, a unique technology developed by Abstergo that will let him tap into his genetic memories, therefore allowing him to live in a simulation that portrays the life of his ancestor.

Through the Animus, Lynch will find himself living the life of his ancestor named Aguillar de Nerha in 15th Century Spain. Only then will Lynch discover that he was a member of a secret society the "Assassin's Creed," a brotherhood that possesses the sufficient knowledge and skills that can be used to successfully take down the Templar empire.

Rumors suggest that the movie will be 2 hours and 20 minutes long, and according to movie director Justin Kurzel, 35% of the film will be set in the past.

The movie reunites former Macbeth cast and director Kurzel, Fassbender, and Marion Cotillard. Other members of the cast include Michael K. Williams, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Ariane Labed.

The "Assassin's Creed" movie will be released in theaters come Dec. 21.
