Xiaomi Mi 4, the current lineup of Mi smart phones Xiaomi

A report has come in claiming that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be one of the first non-Samsung phones to run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.

The report came from Co-Founder and Senior VP Liwan Jiang, who said in a post on Chinese social media site Weibo, that the upcoming flagship handset by Xiaomi tipped to launch this year will be integrated with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset.

Smartphone enthusiasts will remember that Samsung has struck a deal with Qualcomm to deliver the Snapdragon 820 exclusively to the South Korean company until April 2016. This indicates that Xiaomi is serious in providing the best specs possible to their upcoming handset, but also sadly informs users that are eager to get the Xiaomi Mi 5 will most likely have to wait until after April 2016 to acquire the handset.

The upcoming Xiaomi Mi 5 is foreseen to sport a 5.2-inch display, which will either come in full-HD or QHD resolution. To back up the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, the handset will also come in 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM depending on the variant that users would want to opt for. There are also reports indicating that the smartphone will come in two internal memory variants- a 32 GB storage version and a 64 GB storage one.

The Mi 5's cameras are said to be a 16-megapixel back-facing camera and a 13-megapixel front-facing self shooter. The smartphone will also come with a 3600mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 tech. It's most probable that the upcoming handset will launch out of the box with MIUI 7, Xiaomi's in-house developed firmware based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun also added to the excitement when the phone manufacturing exec uploaded a Weibo post claiming that he has spent some time using the Xiaomi Mi 5. This implies that the handset already has a working model and is ready for mass production.
