The sequel to the 2013 zombie apocalypse movie is set to premiere in June of next year, yet a director has not been tapped to take over the film.

Brand Pitt will be returning as U.N. investigator Gerry Lane in "World War Z 2," which is set to premiere on June 9, 2017. However, there are speculations that this might not be the final premiere date for the movie.

Several big movies such as "The Mummy" starring Tom Cruise, "Wonder Woman" with Gal Gadot, "Cars 3," and "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" will be showing around the same time that "World War Z 2" will hit theaters. It is speculated that the film's release date will be postponed to 2018 or 2019 due to the competition between these movies.

Meanwhile, the director for the "World War Z" sequel is not yet final. The director of the first film — Marc Forster — has decided not to take over the sequel. According to Slashfilm, one of the possible reasons for Foster backing out of directing the "World War Z" sequel is because of what happened in the first film. For "World War Z," a new ending was implemented post production and the concerns that came with it were all laid on him.

"The Orphanage" director J.A. Bayona was next in line to direct "World War Z 2," but Movie News Guide reports that Bayona has also backed out of the movie this year to instead work on another sequel, which is "Jurassic World 2."

After Forster and Bayona, "Fight Club" and "Gone Girl" director David Fincher was tapped to take on "World War Z 2." Negotiations are currently ongoing, but there has been no confirmation yet if Fincher will be the one who says yes to directing the upcoming sequel featuring Brad Pitt.

"World War Z 2" is expected to debut on June 9, 2017.
