The eighth and final season of "The Vampire Diaries" will be bringing back old elements and missed characters from Mystic Falls. Meanwhile, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) work on their happily ever after in season 8.

Now that the series will be ending on its eighth season, executive producer Julie Plec aims to honor the long running show by bringing back a lot of classic events and old characters from Mystic Falls.

"We have a lot of plans to pay tribute to everything we've done in the past," said Plec in an interview with TV Guide.

"We've had a lot of fun in the room just reliving our favorite moments and our favorite characters and trying to think of really clever ways to reintegrate elements of the show from the past," added Plec. Among the elements that Plec will be bringing back are Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and Mystic Falls events such as Founder's Day and Miss Mystic Falls.

Previously in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7, Stefan and Caroline have finally gotten back together, and according to Plec, the two will be working hard to keep their relationship strong in the final season.

"They are going to work very hard to have happiness and commitment to each other and fight off all the outside influences that would try to tear them apart. It's never easy, but it's a priority for both of them," explained Plec.

The couple will be enjoying their long awaited reunion for a while before they find themselves in a rumble with the new villain in season 8, but it seems that the two won't be separating from each other anymore.

Meanwhile, Stefan will also be working on some of his personal issues in season 8. Plec shared that one of Stefan's most defining moments will be shown in a flashback, which is the time when he was the Ripper of Monterey.

No other details were revealed how this particular element of his past will play into his present, but maybe Stefan will be going through some serious reflection in this final season of the series.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 8 premieres tonight at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
