The Rance family might be returning in season 2 for another demonic awakening. Meanwhile, the showrunner shares insights on what viewers can expect from season 2.

In the season 1 finale of "The Exorcist," Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera) was able to abolish Pazuzu (Robert Emmet Lunney) who possessed and tried to integrate with Angela Rance (Geena Davis). With the help of Angela and her family — Casey (Hannah Kasulka), Katherine (Brianne Howey), and her husband Henry (Alan Ruck) — Father Tomas was able to banquish Pazuzu out of her body.

On the other hand, Father Marcus (Ben Daniels) was able to save the Pope from being murdered. However, Maria Walters (Kristen Fitzgerald) is now possessed and has other plans than just killing the Pope.

Now that "The Exorcist" has been confirmed for a new season, fans can expect to see Maria executing her plans for the world, which have yet to be revealed in the upcoming renewal.

Meanwhile, the Rance family may be returning in "The Exorcist" season 2.

In an interview with Deadline, series creator Jeremy Slater shares insights on what season 2 will be all about.

"So Season 1 was all about the Rance family and the visit of the Pope to Chicago and a Season 2 would mean our challenge would be to come up with a new storyline that was just as exciting and emotionally gripping — but that doesn't mean we won't see the Rance family again," Slater teases.

However, it seems that Slater is focused on keeping his options open for the new season as of the moment.

"I definitely know where I want to go in Season 2 and what characters I want to take with me. I have a lot of plans, ... but you have to also have the flexibility to pivot on a dime," Slater reveals.

"The Exorcist" season 2 has no confirmed release date yet.
