After Alex (Priyanka Chopra) found out that Ryan (Jake McLaughlin) is one of the terrorists, there might be no hope for the two to repair their relationship. Meanwhile, showrunner delved into what Nimah and Raina – both played by Yasmine Al Massri – represents today.

Previously in episode 8 of "Quantico" season 2 — titled "Odenvy" — Alex and Ryan took a big leap into their relationship. Ryan had proposed to Alex and the latter accepted. Despite the proposal, in the future Alex and Ryan are no longer together. Also, Alex finds out through combat that Ryan belongs to the terrorist group that she has been fighting so hard to take down.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Josh Safran explains where Ryan really is with his relationship with Alex in the present.

"Sadly in this particular moment, what's motivating Ryan's proposal is the fact that he just aided in killing a man and I think he is feeling like he desperately needs something good in his life to hold on to, and I think that is Alex, and that is probably the wrong reason to propose to somebody," Safran explained.

Alex and Ryan have been staying strong despite the challenges that they faced while working together, and Safran hints that fans can expect a new development in their relationship soon.

Meanwhile, "Quantico" season 2 has been trying to address current events in the U.S. right now, especially with the scene of Nimah and Raina confronting each other in the hostage room. Safran and Priyanka told The Hollywood Reporter that their roles relate to the issues that the country is facing.

"Both the sisters are speaking on behalf of massive sections of people and contradicting point of views," Priyanka said.

"Nimah wanted to become an FBI agent because she felt prejudice in the world and wanted to find a way in America to fix and fight that. Raina felt the same prejudice but tried to forgive and understand people through their education. That made Nimah even angrier, because she felt you shouldn't forgive their prejudice," Safran added.

But Safran said that Raina called out Nimah for fighting hate with even more hatred, and that her approach will not help solve anything, which also applies to present events all around the world right now.

"Quantico" season 2 returns on Monday, January 23, 2017 on ABC.
