God has a knack for putting us through seasons of waiting. Many times He does this so that we may learn to trust Him more and to seek Jesus in every situation.
But a season of waiting is never meant by God to be a season of slacking off for any of us.
Following God is very much like riding a bicycle: We always have to be on the move. Once a person riding a bicycle stops pedalling, it becomes impossible to keep balance. It's the same with our walk with God. We must always keep growing and moving.
So how does that work out during times when God calls us to wait?
Practically all of us today are in a season of waiting for God in certain aspects of our lives. Maybe God is asking you to wait for Him concerning a job opportunity, a financial breakthrough, a relationship or a move to another state or country. Whatever it is, God asks us to halt in one area of life.
But that doesn't mean that we are to halt altogether. Yes, God asks us to wait in patience for His move in one area of our lives, but life goes on for other aspects of our lives.
If God asks you to wait on a relationship, you still have to go to work the next day. If God asks you to wait on a migration plan, you still have to read the Bible daily and pray to Him. When God asks us to wait, we should keep moving closer and closer to Him even as we halt other activities.
Psalm 46:10 tells us, "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"
Yes, God asks us to be still, but He also asks us to know He is God. How else are we to know He is God if we don't keep moving, praying, reading His Bible, and attending church group meetings? While we wait on God, we are called to grow in our knowledge of God. After all, growing in patience comes only when we grow in the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
Apart from that, God also calls us to grow in relationships with others, actively seeking community and discipleship. Hebrews 10:25 tells us, "not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near."
As we wait for God, He calls us to seek out those who can encourage and build us up.
Waiting for God does not mean remaining dormant. It means setting aside our pursuits of other things to focus more on our pursuit of Jesus as the prize we so earnestly seek out because as we continue to seek Him, everything else will be added unto us.
