Firefox news: Mozilla developing gadgets that will run on Firefox OS

 XDA Developers Forum

Mozilla has revealed plans to launch new devices that will run on Firefox OS, including a tablet, keyboard, media streaming dongles and a router.

According to Gadgets 360, the non-profit developer Mozilla released an official document containing plans for the devices. Firefox Chief legal and business officer Debelle Dixon-Thayer notes that the file shows initial designs, which means no prototypes have been made as of the moment.

"At Mozilla we work in the open and we are still at the early stages of exploring and prototyping new use cases for Firefox OS in the world of connected devices as an open source project with a clear focus on the user benefit and experience," Dixon-Thayer said to Gadgets 360.

Some leaked documents indicate that one of the hardware that Mozilla is reportedly working on is a 10-inch tablet being called the Firefox Pad, that is a device being designed for the elderly. The tablet runs and operates with only a tablet version of the Firefox browser to keep the experience of the tablet simple and easy.

Other gadgets include the Firefox Pi, a keyboard for emerging markets, and the Firefox Hub, a router much like Google's OnHub that runs on an operating system and additionally serves as a web server to host apps and data storage

Mozilla is also working on a device called the Firefox Stick, an HDMI dongle that can turn a normal television set into a smart TV by letting users web stream content on their television sets. This device will be created in partnership with providers who can provide DRM and content for the stick.

It is reported that all devices currently being designed by Firefox will run on Firefox OS. The non-profit software developer announced early this month that they were shutting down Firefox OS development for smartphones.

However, the company plans to further develop Firefox OS for other devices such as mobile tablets and peripheral smart devices.
