Don't fully understand the magnitude of the cross? Don't worry, it's normal

The cross has become an iconic symbol of our faith. It's everywhere. It's on steeple tops, on book covers, on ornaments, clothes and posters. We see the cross on a regular basis, but do we truly understand the power and implications of the message the cross of Jesus Christ brings? Chances are you don't understand it's full essence yet, and that's fine.

I have been a Christian for almost all of my twenty-six years of existence. I started serving God in ministry with a full heart about thirteen years ago with a revolutionised view of what Jesus had so generously done for a wretch like me to experience His grace and fullness. But until this day, as I continue to seek God more in my personal walk with Him, I am still awed and surprised by how much of the cross I don't understand.

We know that the cross is the way that we now receive salvation by faith, but to say that we've experienced that to its fullness may not be entirely true. As we walk deeper and deeper in our relationship with God, we find out just how many other aspects of Jesus' finished work can really still surprise us.

I remember that line in the song, "Here I am to Worship," where it says, "I'll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross." We will truly never know the magnitude of the grace and love of Jesus Christ, but little by little God reveals it to us. Romans 5:10 says, "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life."

It's going to take an eternity to know and grasp the fullness of Christ's infinite love and grace towards us, but the great news is that we're going to spend an eternity doing just that! Sure we know God is our provider, but to what extent have we experienced that. Yes, we know Jesus is our redeemer, but do we truly know the magnitude of the cost? I don't think we can even ever come up with a figure or currency to match that price, and that price was paid for you!

Understanding the cross fully is close to unfathomable, but if that's making you worry, don't.  It's just meant to show how infinitely wondrous and majestic our God is to have lavished such an infinite amount of love upon us that He - the holy and mighty Creator - would hang Himself upon a cross so that we would be set free. And that is a journey worth pursuing. As we walk more and more with Christ, we yearn to see more and more of who He is and what He has done for us.
