Antisemitic abuse of Labour MP branded 'disgusting, racist and sexist'

A man has been condemned as "disgusting, racist and sexist" after he admitted sending a Jewish MP abusive messages and death threats.

Luciana Burger, Liverpool Wavertree MP, is standing to be Labour Mayor of Liverpool

John Nimmo, 28, sent a number of emails to the Liverpool Wavertree MP, Luciana Burger, including one which said she should "get it like Jo Cox". Another said: "Watch your back Jewish scum, regards your friend the Nazi".

He has admitted two counts of sending a message causing anxiety or distress and will be sentenced on August 24 at Newcastle Crown Court.

The Community Security Trust (CST), a charity that protects British Jews from antisemitism strongly condemned the abuse.

Spokesman Mark Gardner  told Christian Today: "It was disgusting, racist and sexist and it is important that a strong message is sent to all those who behave in such a way."

It is not the first time Nimmo has been found arrested for abuse. In 2014 he was jailed after he sent messages on Twitter to feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez and MP Stella Creasy.

The court heard that on July 6 Nimmo wrote to Burger referred to a far-right activist jailed last December and said: "Justice for Joshua Bonehill-Paine will be sweet, he has friends everywhere. Watch your back Jewish scum, regards your friend the Nazi."

Two days later he sent another, which read: "You will get it like Jo Cox did, you better watch your back Jewish scum".

The former shadow minister for mental health said the messages caused her "great fear and anguish" and that the reference to Jo Cox's murder was "terrifying".

"I was extremely concerned for my safety and I felt completely under threat," she said in a statement, adding she had received antisemitic abuse before but this left her in a state of "huge distress" and caused her to "feel physically sick".
