"American Horror Story" is currently airing its sixth season on FX, but the show has already been picked up for a seventh and eighth season.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that FX has picked up a seventh season for the horror anthology TV series "American Horror Story." FX Networks and Productions CEO John Landgraf said in a statement, "Ryan, Brad and their team of remarkable writers have done an amazing job of keeping 'American Horror Story' endlessly inventive, shocking and entertaining, and we are honored to move ahead with them on the seventh installment."

The network's pick-up of the series was announced midway through "American Horror Story" season 6, and according to series co-creator Ryan Murphy in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, a theme was already decided for the upcoming seventh season.

"It comes to me as it always comes to me. I sit up and bed and I say 'That's it!' I have been mulling a couple of ideas and I wasn't loving it. Then I was thinking of this other thing and I literally sat up and bed and said 'That's it!'" explained Murphy.

He also shares that the seventh installment is "also a narratively strange idea," and that all the seasons are connected.

Although no other details have been revealed about "American Horror Story" season 7, Murphy did reveal that a possible eighth season is already in the works. The showrunner explained that he has already been working with a writer on his secret season, which is "like a 2 year project" that they will continue to work in secret until its debut time.

"We lay a lot of pipe, and you'll see it explode in seasons seven and eight," Murphy teased.

"American Horror Story: Roanoke" is the franchise's sixth and current season that airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT on FX. The story revolves around a paranormal documentary series titled "My Roanoke Nightmare," wherein a married couple move into a new home in North Carolina where they experience supernatural events that terrorize them.

"American Horror Story" season 7 is expected to premiere in October 2017.
