Netflix has taken on the show "A Series of Unfortunate Events," which will premiere in January next year. The antagonist of the series — Count Olaf — will be played by renowned actor Neil Patrick Harris.

Netflix recently announced that they will be releasing "A Series of Unfortunate Events" on their network and that the show will premiere next year on Friday, Jan. 13.

The series is based on the novels created by Daniel Handler — also titled "A Series of Unfortunate Events" — which is told by a narrator called Lemony Snicket. The books follow the lives of the Baudelaire children, who were orphaned when their parents died in a tragic fire. Soon after, the Baudelaire orphans are transferred into the custody of Count Olaf, who tries to get hold of the Baudelaire family fortune.

After several horrible occurrences orchestrated by Count Olaf, the Baudelaire orphans are released from his custody and are handed over to a new guardian. But Count Olaf is determined to acquire the Baudelaires' fortune, and he even spends the rest of his life creating terrible accidents and horrible coincidences in order to do so.

Netflix released its first trailer for the upcoming series, revealing Harris as Count Olaf and the actors who portray the Baudelaire children.

The Baudelaire children are named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny. Violet will be played by Malina Weissman while Louis Hynes will portray Klaus, the Parent Herald reports.

Weissman has had several appearances on film and television, including "Supergirl," where she portrayed the young Kara (Melissa Benoist). Weissman has also portrayed the young April (Megan Fox) in the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" 2014 film.

Meanwhile, Hynes is somewhat new to the Hollywood scene and will be playing Klaus, who is a bookworm and an intelligent young man. The youngest Baudelaire — Sunny — is a toddler and will allegedly only be portrayed via CGI in the Netflix series.

"A Series of Unfortunate Events" premieres on Friday the 13th, January 2017 on Netflix.
