Game developer and publisher Sega has announced that a new installment in the Valkyria franchise is being developed. "Valkyria Chronicles 4" is set to be released on consoles sometime in 2018.

The company released a five-minute project announcement trailer, showing a glimpse of the team's dedication to the popular video game franchise. It also showed that the upcoming title is returning to its roots with tactics-based role-playing gameplay.

"Our passion for this project now transcends national boundaries and will soon spread across the globe," said the team in the video. "Our hearts swell with pride knowing we can soon deliver the greatest game in the series into the arms of those who matter most: you, the players."

The trailer also showed some of the familiar visual elements found in the franchise, including the character styles and setting. The upcoming game will be giving its own take of the 1930s and will take place during the fictional Second European War.

In the game, players will take on the roles of soldiers fighting in the frontlines of the Federation against the opposing Imperial army. The trailer shows how the game tries to capture the realities of war with its own artistic and dramatic storyboards. It also shows the levels of warfare at which the characters will be fighting, as there are moral and psychological fronts to deal with aside from the conflict's more immediate threat to life.

The announcement trailer also suggests that the gameplay of the upcoming installment is more similar to older Valkyria games compared to the "Valkyria Revolution" released earlier this year. "Valkyria Revolution" tried to take the series to another direction with a different style of gameplay. However, the attempt failed to win over the franchise's fans.

"Valkyria Chronicles 4" will be released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This marks the first time that the franchise will be releasing a title on Nintendo's new console.
