Guillermo del Toro has unveiled the final trailer for his upcoming film, "The Shape of Water," during a live video where he answered some questions from fans.
The director went live on Facebook to address some fan inquiries about his upcoming movie, but surprised fans by showing a new trailer right off the bat.
The trailer showcased the unique visual style of the director and the sullen tone of the film. Unlike the film's previous trailers, the final one highlights the Cold War setting of the movie. It shows how the U.S. government is desperate to keep its secrets hidden from the Russians.
The story of "The Shape of Water" is set in 1960s America and centers on Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a mute woman who works as a cleaning lady at a high-security facility that houses a strange and mysterious aquatic creature (Doug Jones). Elisa forms a bond with the creature, which leads to an unexpected relationship between them.
In the film, Elisa must find a way to free the creature from the government. However, Strickland (Michael Shannon), the terrifying government agent in charge of the creature, will do everything in his power to foil their plans.
The visuals in the trailer managed to capture the strange and peculiar vibe that is inherent in the narrative, which was penned by Del Toro himself along with Vanessa Taylor. The film also stars Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
"The Shape of Water" previously premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to positive critical reception. Critics praised the performance of Hawkins and the way Del Toro painted the film with his own unique sentimentality.
The director also discussed some aspects of the creative process he used in making the film, including his inspiration for the aquatic creature, and his interesting choices for the color palette in the film.
"The Shape of Water" will be released to theaters on Dec. 8.
