Game developer Red Barrels has announced plans to bring the popular horror game franchise "Outlast" to the Nintendo Switch. The first-person shooter games are set to arrive to the new hybrid console in the first quarter of 2018.

The news was announced through the game's official Facebook account, which posted a recent update about the developer's efforts. The Nintendo Switch version will come five years since the release of the first "Outlast" game. The second title, "Outlast 2," was released earlier this year.

The post also confirmed that there are currently no plans to release a downloadable content for "Outlast 2."

"We've considered many options, but none of them felt appropriate for a DLC," said the developer.

The team behind the franchise also acknowledged that "Outlast 2" generated a lot of questions because it was created to make players feel like they are rats in a maze, without any knowledge of what's outside. Because of this, they promised fans that their questions will be answered eventually when "Outlast 3" is released.

In the post, the developer also teased a brand-new release set in the "Outlast" universe.

"It won't be a sequel to Outlast or Outlast 2, but it will be a distinct experience set in the Outlast universe," said the developer.

While no further details were revealed about the mystery project, there is speculation that it will be a virtual reality (VR) version of the "Outlast" games.

"Outlast" was first released for PC in 2013, and for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014. Upon its release, the game received positive reviews from critics and gaming fans alike. A downloadable content titled "Whistleblower," which serves a prequel to the franchise, was released for the title in 2014.

Due to the success of "Outlast," Red Barrels released a sequel, "Outlast 2," to further expand the franchise's universe. Overall, the survival horror series has sold over four million copies.
