OnePlus Two release date: Cheap Android phone successor coming next year

An upgrade of the hit OnePlus One smartphone will be released in the second or third quarter of 2015, according to a Reddit post by OnePlus executives Carl Pei and David S.

The OnePlus Two, codenamed "Lettuce" by the company (as opposed to its predecessor's "Bacon" codename), will reportedly be of a smaller size than the previous model, following concerns about the bulky size of the OnePlus One.

"We've seen a lot of people asking for a smaller device, and want to let everyone know that we hear you. We're thinking about it," stated the post.

The latest device will come with the Android L as standard.  The company has also upgraded the system on the OnePlus Two, saying that they have boosted the device's touchscreen and fixed some bugs.  The phone's producer, emerging Chinese electronics company self-named "OnePlus," aims to go head-to-head with Samsung's Galaxy S5, HTC One, and the Google Nexus 5.

The OnePlus Two's predecessor, OnePlus One, was one of this year's smartphone phenomena. It had quality specs and a simple user interface — and a cheap price.  But while the device received generally positive feedback, there was not enough to go around.

When asked about the OnePlus One still being unavailable, the executives said that "the supply is below the demand." In other words, the company has opted for a more conservative approach in terms of its business strategies.

"Not in 2014. We understand that our current method may be slowing our growth down, but we'd rather grow slower and in a healthy way than taking too much risk and going out of business," the OnePlus execs stated. "Risk management is extra important in our scenario where we don't have hardware margins."

The Chinese company is reportedly accepting pre-orders for OnePlus Two this month.

While fans are still waiting for the launch of the OnePlus Two, they can order the "Silver Bullet Earphones" from the company's website.  The affordable $15 headphones, launched last Sept. 29, sports an aluminium casing that complements "One's Sandstone Black cover."
