Moto X Play to launch in the United States as Droid Maxx 2

Last month, Motorola Mobility unveiled its latest Moto X Style and Moto X Play handsets. The Moto X Style, also known as Pure Edition in the United States, is scheduled to be launched sometime next month, while the Moto X Play is now expected to launch in the United States later this year under the name "Droid Maxx 2" via wireless carrier Verizon.

Previous rumors claimed that the Moto X Play was not going to make it to the U.S. market. However, recent reports suggest otherwise.

According to The Verge, the Droid Maxx 2 recently appeared in leaked images published by Android Police. In terms of the specifications, the Droid Maxx 2 will sport a 5.5-inch display screen with a 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution.

The new phone will have a powerful 21-megapixel camera on the back along with a 5-megapixel camera on the front. Inside, there will be a Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 processor that will come with quad-core 1.7 GHz Cortex-A53 & quad-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 central processing units (CPUs) and an Adreno 405 graphics processing unit (GPU), according to GSM Arena.

In addition, the Droid Maxx 2 will offer only 8 GB of built-in memory storage, which is half of the 16 GB that the X Play has. The phone will also pack 2 GB of RAM, powered by a large 3,630 mAh battery.

According to reports, Motorola's other new handset, the Pure Edition, is also expected to be available in the United States via Verizon under the brand "Droid Turbo 2".

Slash Gear reports that the Droid Turbo 2 will come with the same specs as the Moto X Style, except for the plastic OLED display screen. In comparison, the Moto X Style will sport a larger 5.7-inch display screen with a higher 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution. Under the hood, it will pack a Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 processor along with 3GB of RAM.
