This week, Microsoft revealed the next generation iteration of its hybrid detachable laptops, Surface Book 2. The new model boasts powerful features under the hood with Intel's latest generation processor and discrete graphics. Here is how it matches up against its top competitor, Apple's Macbook pro.
"The Surface Book 2 is twice as performant as the MacBooks that just started hitting the market now," said Panos Panay, Microsoft's corporate vice president of devices. "So if you took the 13-inch and compared it to the 13-inch," he added, "you'd see [Surface Book 2 is] two times more powerful. That's the same as the two 15-inches, you would see it two times more powerful."
Both the 13-inch and 15-inch models of the Surface Book 2 cost slightly higher than their Macbook Pro counterparts. However, the Microsoft device's latest hardware components make it worth the consumers' money.
The Surface Book has the 8<sup>th generation of Intel i7 processors on both variants, while the Macbook Pro still has the 7<sup>th generation CPUs.
When it comes to graphics processing, the Surface Book can outplay the Macbook Pro's Iris Plus with its powerful Nvidia GTX 1050 graphics in the 13-inch variant. In the 15-inch category, the Surface Book packs the VR-ready Nvidia GTX 1060, which is more advanced than 15-inch Macbook's Radeon Pro 560.
The Surface Book, also features a much higher resolution display compared to the Macbook Pro. The 13-inch Surface Book has a resolution of 3000 by 2000 pixels, while a comparable Macbook has a 2560 by 1600 resolution. In the 15-inch front, the Surface Book has a 3240 by 2160 resolution while the Macbook Pro screen has a 2880 by 1800 resolution.
On top of that, Microsoft also claims that its new laptop will last 70 percent longer on a single charge than the Macbook Pro.
Due to the different operating systems in the devices, it would be up to the users to test if the new Microsoft laptop does perform better compared to the Apple device, based on their hands-on experience.
The Surface Book 2 is set to be released on Nov. 9.
