A Colorado mother has given birth to a baby girl tipping the scales at almost 14 pounds.

Alisha Hernandez went into labor on Monday expecting to give birth to an average seven pound baby. But when the baby arrived via caesarean section at the San Luis Valley Hospital, both mom and hospital staff were shocked at the size of the newborn.

The newborn, named Mia Yasmin Garcia, was born weighing exactly 13 pounds and 13 ounces. She measured 22 inches long.

The baby's father, Francisco Garcia, spoke of his shock to local news station 9News: "They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that. Even in the San Luis Valley, they were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they've never seen a baby like that... The nurse, she was shocked. She's like "Come here! Come here! Come here!" I went and I'm like, what happened? She's like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces."

The new parents also have twin girls, whose combined weight was less than Mia's, and two other girls.

Mia was taken to a nearby Denver hospital after she suffered from low glucose levels and difficulty breathing. She is expected to make a full recovery.

Last year, a petite woman in California gave birth to a 15 pound baby boy who measured 24 inches long. The mother, Vanessa Cervantez, was only 5'1" tall but had previously carried other heavy babies. Cervantez told Victor Valley Daily Press: "I couldn't even believe it. They had to double check because I didn't believe them; I thought the machine was broken. None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here."
