Rory Feek tries not to live in the past because daughter Indy needs him now

Not a day passes by when Christian country singer Rory Feek does not think of his late wife Joey, who passed away last March 4 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.

Rory says there are times when the pain of her loss feels manageable. But there are difficult days when Rory feels like Joey's loss is too much to bear.

"Tomorrow, it will be three months since Joey passed away, and most days, I do pretty well. But some. The harder ones. I find myself reaching down and picking up that hurt – the pain of knowing that she is really gone – and trying to carry it on my shoulders. But I can't. I have something else on my shoulders now. Someone else," he writes on his blog.

Rory is of course referring to their two-year-old daughter Indiana, nicknamed Indy. Before Joey passed away, she made sure that Rory and Indy bonded so the young girl would need less of her mother and more of her father. The plan worked, because Indy is doing well despite her mother's absence.

However, this also meant that Rory has to step up his fatherhood game. Even though there are times Rory feels tempted to just live in the past and cling to memories of Joey, he must brave the present to be able to take good care of Indy. The singer says he tries his best to draw strength from God and face the future with a brave heart.

"Our little two-year old desperately needs her Papa here. Not there. In the present. Not the past. So again, I lay my burden down and let Him have it. And I trust that His plan is better than mine. And I know it is. Because I can see it unfolding right in front of me," he says.
