Orange is the New Black season 2 cast update; Netflix prison comedy is a success [VIDEO]

"Orange is the New Black" is another Netflix success. Season 2 of the prison drama has been given the go-ahead, but filming has yet to commence.

The comedy-drama premiered on Netflix on July 11, 2013, and within weeks the 13-episode series has proved to be a hit. The story revolves around Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, who is sent to federal prison for possessing a suitcase full of drug money for an international drug smuggler, which also happens to be her past lover. The series explores Chapman adjusting the hardships of prison life.

The series confronts the issues that inmates face such as race, class and mental-health issues.

"Orange is the New Black" has been dubbed "the best TV show about prison ever made" by Washington Post's Dylan Matthews.

Mashable's Nora Grenfell said the prison comedy was what "Netflix was made for", adding that it's "a new kind of show that thrives under the streaming programming model rather than being compromised by it."

"Orange is the New Black" also stars Laura Prepon as Alex Vause (Chapmman's former girlfriend), Michael J. Harney as Sam Healy (prison manager), Michelle Hurst as Miss Claudette (Chapman's former roommate), Kate Mulgrew as Galina 'Red' Reznikov (prison-mate), and Jason Biggs as Larry Bloom (Chapman's fiancé).

Taryn Manning, who stars as Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett, will also be returning for season 2.

The series is based on a Piper Kerman's real-life memoir of the same name. The show was renewed for the second season on June 27, even before the series premiered.
