The company is expected to announce the Moto 360 2nd generation smartwatch alongside its new Moto X (2015) and Moto G (2015) at an event in New York City, according to recent reports.

Here's what to expect from the new Moto 360 2 smartwatch in terms of the specifications and improvements over its predecessor.

The previous Moto 360 smartwatch runs on the Android Wear operating system (OS) and sports a 1.56-inch backlit LCD display screen with a 320 x 290 pixel resolution. The Moto 360 2, on the other hand, will also run on the Android Wear OS and is expected to sport a similar 1.56-inch LCD display screen but with a 360 x 360 resolution.

The Moto 360 comes with a round design that "maximizes the display area while ensuring a comfortable fit," according to Motorola. Techno Buffalo recently reported that the upcoming Moto 360 2 device will have an identical design to its predecessor.

In addition, the Moto 360 packs a TI OMAP™ 3 processor, with 512MB RAM and up to 4GB internal memory storage. Meanwhile, the Moto 360 2 is expected to have the same 512MB RAM, the same 4GB memory capacity, but with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 processor. This is the same processor used by Samsung's Gear Live smartwatch that was released last year.

Other features the previous Moto 360 offers include a pedometer and an optical heart rate monitor. The Moto 360 2 will also come with a heart rate monitor along with a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a barometer. For the batteries, the Moto 360 is powered by a 320 mAh battery while the new Motorola smartwatch is expected to have a larger 400 mAh battery.

Other new smartwatches coming out this year are Samsung's latest "Gear A" and Huawei's first ever "Huawei Watch" devices. These new watches are expected to also sport round designs.
