Microsoft HoloLens release date: specs and features

The HoloLens, Microsoft Corporation's latest holographic virtual reality technology, was introduced to the world last January and has made another appearance at this month's Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 (E3 2015) press conference in Los Angeles.

The software giant recently showed how the new technology worked, but this time alongside a virtual game. The popular Minecraft video game was reportedly demonstrated on the Microsoft HoloLens virtual reality headset, including a demonstration of hand gesture controls and voice commands.

PC Advisor UK reported that the HoloLens enabled gamers to get a better picture of the whole Minecraft video game on top, instead of the first person perspective, and also enabled them to zoom in on any location.

"Microsoft HoloLens introduces all new ways to the game with mixed reality, including 'Minecraft' on the HoloLens, a fully-featured version of 'Minecraft' that allows players to explore the game world in full 3-D," the software giant said.

Microsoft fans are also expecting the launch of the Windows 10 operating system on July 29. The HoloLens is said to be compatible with the new operating system, according to reports.

In terms of the specs, Todd Holmdahl said: "The advanced sensors in HoloLens capture information about what you're doing and the environment you're in."

"This is done through the inertial measurement unit (IMU) which includes an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer. It's this IMU, coupled with head tracking cameras, which enables the HoloLens to understand where your head is and how it's moving," Holmdahl added.

Microsoft has yet to confirm the release date and price of the HoloLens. PC Advisor UK earlier reported sources as saying the HoloLens might be released to the market sometime next year.
