The sixth season of the crime drama "Major Crimes" will soon be returning to television at the end of the month, but fans of the series may have mixed feelings as network TNT announced that the upcoming season will be the show's last.
TNT has not cited any specific reason for the series' cancellation, but the show's creator James Duff clarified that it was not his idea and he did not want to leave the show.
"I'm directing the finale of 'Major Crimes,' so I can't really answer all the questions that are being asked today about why Major Crimes was cancelled before we ran our sixth season," Duff said in a Facebook post. "But I do want you to know that it was not at all my idea, nor did I want to leave the show. The actors, the writers, the producers and our talented crew would have held on as long as we were relevant."
He acknowledged the loyalty of the show's fans as the reason for the series success. He ended his message with an apology. "So sorry I couldn't stop this moment from happening," he said.
The show's star, Mary McDonnell posted on Instagram that she was not surprised by the news of the cancellation. "This was not a surprise," she said. "The writing was clearly on the wall."
Cancelling a series right before a season premiere is not an ideal situation for any show. Hopefully, the creative team still has enough time to create a finale that would be fitting as an ending not just for the season, but for the series as a whole.
"Major Crimes" is TNT's longest running scripted series as a spin-off of the cable network's massively popular hit series "The Closer."
The upcoming season will feature three big crimes for the characters to investigate and solve. "Major Crimes" season 6 will premiere on Oct. 31 at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
