'John Wick Chapter 3' news: Production gets delayed; still on track for 2019 release

The production for the third installment in the acclaimed action packed film series "John Wick" is getting pushed back to sometime in 2018. Sources have reported that the crew behind the film has not made steps to begin the filming of the trilogy-concluding film.

Previously, it was reported that the third "John Wick" film was getting fast tracked following the success of "John Wick: Chapter 2." It was believed that the production was set to begin in autumn of this year.

However, casting and location scouting have not been done for the upcoming film, which makes it very unlikely that its production would start this year.

Lionsgate has previously pegged the release date of "Chapter 3" at May 17. The studio seems to be firm on the said release date, as European media has been notified that the movie will be released there at around the same time. German website Filmstarts have confirmed that "John Wick: Chapter 3" will be released in their country on May 23.

Despite the delays, this still gives the cast and crew ample time to shoot and produce the movie. It is now believed that the movie could have a spring-summer production next year.

The "John Wick" movies caught the world by surprise with its raw, bone-crushing action. After a highly-successful first film, the studios behind the project has, unsurprisingly, decided to turn it into a film franchise with a wider backstory and an overarching narrative.

"John Wick: Chapter 2" kept the same fast paced fighting choreography but made it a point to flesh out the world of assassins in which the plot revolves. With the third film, the story of John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves, will be the finale but that may not stop Lionsgate from developing the universe further. After all, this is ripe time for franchises and interconnected films, plus an action-based movie revolving around the universe of assassins may not be such a bad idea.
