The original Final Fantasy 7 role playing video game was released back in 1997 for the PlayStation 1 game console.

Following its initial release, the original Final Fantasy 7 video game had sold over two million copies, according to a report, earning the "Console Role Playing Game of the Year" and "Console Adventure Game of the Year" awards in 1997.

Square Enix had announced its plans at the recent Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 (E3 2015) press conference event, which was held in Los Angeles, California.

The new Final Fantasy 7 video game is expected to come out for the PlayStation 4 platform, and possibly to other platforms as well. It's unclear whether the new video game will come out with just the original story, but it has been reported that the upcoming remake is already in the works alongside its original developers.

Video game artist and director Tetsuya Nomura told 4Gamer regarding the developers' decision to launch a remake of the Final Fantasy 7, "To put it simply, one of main reasons is the timing for the staff members that are developing the game, and how it worked out in our favor,"

"Also, as we've seen, Square Enix now has more PlayStation 4 titles, so we felt that we could increase the console's popularity, and make an announcement before those games release. And there's one more thing—we're hitting that age." Nomura added.

Gaming news website Siliconera also recently reported that the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 remake will be available for iOS platform devices sometime by this summer and for the PlayStation 4 console by this winter.
