Last month, fans of the space opera series "Dark Matter" were met with disappointing news as the show was cancelled by network Syfy after three seasons. Series creator Joseph Mallozzi, recently revealed that a fourth season was almost made. After the cancellation, MGM showed interest in picking up the popular sci-fi series and crossing it over with the universe of "Stargate."
On his blog, Mallozzi shared that there was a last ditch effort to save "Dark Matter" after its television network decided to cancel it.
"Not long after word broke of the syfy cancellation, we had several interested parties reach out to us," the show creator said. "One of the most intriguing of them was MGM, my former home for 12 glorious years while I was working on the Stargate franchise. They loved the show. They were aware of the fan base. And they recognized a great opportunity."
Mallozzi said MGM wanted to bring the show over to its new streaming service, Stargate Command. The service is an online portal for fans of "Stargate" where they could instantly watch all of the episodes and movies.
One scenario that was discussed was giving "Dark Matter" a miniseries that would comprise of six to eight episodes. This would allow the series to close out the narrative and provide closure for fans of the show.
Another scenario was a possible crossover between "Dark Matter" and the "Stargate" universe. Given "Stargate's" episodic format that features different planets from different parts of the universe, it would not have been a stretch for the series to eventually encounter the characters from "Dark Matter."
Unfortunately, the attempt did not work out, as the contracts for the cast members as well as the production set eventually ended. Mallozzi, however, remains intent on giving "Dark Matter" fans the ending they deserve. He told The Verge that he is "still holding out hope that somehow, some way, we can find a way to give fans that series-ending miniseries." He also said that if a miniseries cannot be done, he will go back to the series' roots and finish the narrative through a comic book.
