Universal Pictures has released its first trailer for the upcoming biblical and historical drama movie "Mary Magdalene." The movie will tell the story of Mary Magdalene as she ventures with Jesus Christ until his crucifixion. The character Mary Magdalene in the movie is far from the description given to her by Western medieval as a sinner.

The character of Mary Magdalene will be portrayed by Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara and Jesus Christ will be played by another nominee Joaquin Phoenix. The international trailer of the movie starts with the statement, "The Untold Story." Academy Award nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is also part of the movie. The movie will be directed by renowned director Garth Davis.

According to the trailer, Mary Magdalene is struggling with her own demons and she turns to Jesus during this trying time. The trailer also reveals that Mary Magdalene had spread the world of the lord after the death of Jesus Christ and had also been baptizing people.

According to the video description of the movie by Universal Pictures, the movie sheds light on the real identity of Mary Magdalene. Universal Pictures wrote, "Mary Magdalene is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history."

An article by Metro indicates that the movie will promote feminism as it tells the story about women empowerment. Metro states that the movie is a feminist film for all women no matter their religion. The movie is believed to tell the story of Jesus Christ's life until his death through the perspective of a woman who walked next to him.

The movie will premiere in Germany and the U.K. on March 15, 2018 and will be released in the U.S. on Mar. 30, 2018.

Mara and Phoenix are a real-life couple. The pair had already worked together in the film "Her" released in 2013. The two are expected to star together in an upcoming drama film "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot."
