'X-Men' director Matthew Vaughn prefers working with DC than Marvel

Marvel "X-Men" movie franchise director Matthew Vaughn is switching sides, as he has now confirmed that he will be working on a DC movie and even explains why he now prefers working with them.

The 46-year-old director actually feels that working on a DC Extended Universe (DCEU) will be a lot less stressful than working for another one of Marvel's superhero or mutant movies since he alleged that there is a lot less pressure for them to succeed. This was Vaughn's sentiment towards DCEU after their recent foray into a superhero culmination movie, "Justice League," lost more than it gained.

"It's more fun getting involved with franchises when they're on the down, because then it's easier to make a good film, so if I got involved with a few of the superhero films out there that have been disappointing, it's going to be...if I do OK, it'll probably be better," explained Vaughn. This does mean that there is no other way for DCEU movies but to improve, and Vaughn certainly wants to see this become a reality.

Vaughn then looked to one of his most successful movies for Marvel, "X-Men: First Class," as a good example of a low stakes movie whose acclaim and box office success ballooned up unexpectedly. He also noted how this can lead to a lot more creative freedom and more reasonable expectations from the fans and critics alike.

It is worth noting that "First Class" was one of the best "X-Men" movies with critic aggregate score of 86 percent positive on Rotten Tomatoes. By comparison, the previous "X-Men: The Last Stand" movie which came before it was poorly received at only 58 percent positive critic aggregate scores. Vaughn arguably salvaged the franchise and breathed new life into it, though the director did admit that this was easy since the bar was set quite low.

With this in mind, Vaughn claimed that he would have a lot more difficulty following up on the success of something like "Guardians of the Galaxy" which was a huge hit. Whether Vaughn can shed new light into the DCEU remains to be seen, though the director is now in talks for the production of "Man of Steel 2."
