'The Big Bang Theory' season 9: Executive producer Steve Molaro previews what's next for Amy and Sheldon

In the midseason finale of "The Big Bang Theory," Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) got intimate for the first time after five years together. The pair, who had just made up after their season 8 breakup, shared a special night for Amy's birthday, which happened to fall on the same day as the world premiere of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

While Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and the rest of the gang joyfully watched the movie, Sheldon proved to his girlfriend that she is more important than anything else and even told her that he loves her.

Speaking with the Daily Messenger, executive producer Steve Molaro talked about why they decided to have Sheldon and Amy consummate their relationship and what awaits the newly reunited couple when the show returns for the second half of season 9.

Molaro said that they always knew that it was going to happen someday and that it was the perfect way to end the pair's arc in this season, which started in season 8 when Amy broke up with Sheldon.

"It's something that's been floating around obviously in the air for years," said Molaro of the pivotal moment.

On connecting Amy and Sheldon's story with the "Star Wars" premiere, the producer said that the couple's storyline was "so monumental" that they wanted to find a way to have the other story, which was about Leonard, Raj (Kunal Nayyar), and Howard (Simon Helberg) going to the premiere, balance it all out.

"I think with the global excitement of the 'Star Wars' movie premiere certainly helped make that happen," said Molaro.

When the show returns, Molaro said that they are going to "step back" from the Shamy storyline as the entire season has been largely focused on them.

"It's a chance to let them be happy in the background and refocus on the other amazing characters on the show," he explained.

When asked whether Sheldon will finally get to propose to Amy, Molaro said that the engagement ring will make an appearance again "at some point" on the show.

"At some point, I'm sure it will," said Molaro of the engagement ring. "I promise you we have not forgotten about it."

"The Big Bang Theory" airs Thursdays at 8/7c on CBS.
