Fans of science-fiction (sci-fi) horror games are in for a quite a shocking news, as the modern remake of "System Shock" has been put on hold, with its developers taking a hiatus.

Developer Nightdive Studios has announced that it will be taking a break from remaking the highly acclaimed classic "System Shock" for creative reasons involving the game. They have released an official statement through Polygon in which they have indicated that the hiatus of the project is indefinite and might last a while before the remake can be resumed.

Fans and crowdfunders worrying that the project might get abandoned and their money wasted need not fear too much as the developers did make an assurance that they will finish the game.

Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick wrote that "I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but not ending the project. 'System Shock' is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled." As for when the game will be completed remains a big question, especially since the developer's budget for the game has reached $1.35 million from 21,625 backers in Kickstarter alone.

This could also consequently halt the flow of crowdfunding that the game has been receiving since the summer of 2016. It is also worth noting that the developers also expected and promised a release date by the end of 2017, a projection that was apparently not met.

Polygon claimed that it had an anonymous source close to the project alleging that the problems the game's development is experiencing right now are due to "mission creep" and unrealistic ambitions that have exhausted the Kickstarter fund despite how big it was. This means that the developers might have kept changing their objectives for the game resulting in unplanned commitment.

Nightdive did confirm that the Kickstarter fund was indeed spent and that they have been looking for publishers to fund the game directly but to no avail. As for the game's release date, the developers have estimated that the game has been delayed and will then be released 18 to 24 months from now instead.
