'Supergirl' season 2 finale news, release date: Biggest episode yet, executive producer teases

When "Supergirl" returns with the final episode of the season, viewers should expect to see a mix between adrenaline-pumping battle scenarios and tear-jerking scenes. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says it is the biggest episode yet.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the exec shares they managed to set aside some money for the last episode of season 2. The money they saved was allotted for visual effects. According to Kreisberg, some of it was spent on an extra day for production so they could make the scenes even massive.

Joining Kara a.k.a. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) in her fight against the new Daxamite race are a few unlikely characters. Kreisberg does not reveal Kara's new allies, but he does share a few names who will rush to her aid. Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) is one of them. He will not only lend a super hand or two but will also provide guidance to the girl of steel, who will be faced by terrible decisions. Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) is another ally Supergirl desperately needs in the episode to come.

Kreisberg says they could not have picked a better villain for the season finale. He says, "We needed a big, iconic Superman villain, and there really isn't anybody more iconic, at least in terms of a physical opponent for Superman, than Zod (Mark Gibbon)."

In an interview with TVLine, the exec shares that Gibbon's Zod will not have the mechanical armor as seen in "Man of Steel;" instead, he will be dressed in what looks like a Nazi uniform, like the character from the comic books in the '60s.

"It really feels like the culmination of everything we've been doing all season long, all the different story lines. ... It all comes together," the exec teases.

The final episode of "Supergirl" season 2 premieres this Monday, May 22, at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
