'Stranger Things' news: Retro style game available for smartphones

"Stranger Things: The Game" will let players control the main characters of the series. It is now available on Android and iOS devices. Google Play Store

Fans of Netflix's "Stranger Things" can now enjoy the franchise on the go, as an 8-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) style mobile game has just been released for Android and iOS.

Developed by indie game studio BonusXP, "Stranger Things: The Game" will feature a top-down 2D perspective where players will get to control the main characters of the Netflix series in an action-adventure game, starting with the show's Jim Hopper (David Harbour), the rugged police officer tasked with finding four missing children, which included Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his friends.

The game will also come with two difficulty modes: normal and classic. The classic mode was described as "1984 hard," as a homage to the difficult video games of the '80s, as well as the year when the fictional story took place.

Players will also be able to explore Hawkins, Indiana and its surroundings, as the game features popular series locations like Mirkwood Forest where Byers was trapped and Hawkins Lab where the secret government experiments took place. Puzzles are also present in the game and can be solved with a number of different ways using each of the playable characters' abilities, such as Lucas' (Caleb McLaughlin) Wrist Rocket and Nancy's (Natalia Dyer) baseball bats.

The game is free on both the Android and the iOS and is a promotion for the upcoming second season of "Stranger Things," but Business Insider suggested that it looks much more than an interactive advertisement. The website also pointed out that while the game is a tribute to the style of the '80s, the graphics are more in tune with the early '90s.

At the time of writing, the mobile game is well-received and has a rating of 4.9 on the Google Play Store, although this might change once the downloads and the popularity of the game and the Netflix series increase.

The game is available for free on Android and iOS devices and will contain a story that precedes the next season of "Stranger Things" which will be arriving on Oct. 27 on Netflix.
