LG G5 specs, features, and release date speculations

LG G4 is barely a year old, having been released in April of this year. However, rumors are now pointing to the next flagship from the Korean tech company — the LG G5.

Recent speculations suggest that the G5 is expected to have a USB-C port, an iris-scanning technology, fingerprint sensor, a powerful Snapdragon 820 processor, and the latest mobile operating system (OS) Android Marshmallow.

Venture Capital Post gathered that the company is collaborating with IRIENCE, also a Korean company that develops with iris-scanning technology. This technology reportedly has the capability of scanning the iris of an individual who's 50 meters away, which should improve the phone's security features.

ET News, a Korean IT news outlet, also reported that the G5 would be the first phone to have an all-metal body case, as opposed to the usual plastic body.

If rumors of an all-metal body LG phone prove true, that would only mean that the phone may not support microSD cards and will not have removable battery, as noted by Digital Trends.

Other rumored specs and features include a 5.5-inch display with 4K resolution; a main camera with at least 16 megapixels; and a chance to carry a 3,000 mAh battery, as noted in a report from Trusted Reviews.

As for the release date, LG is known to be unpredictable in that field. The LG G2 was released back in September 2013, the LG G3 in May 2014, and the current flagship G4 in April 2015. This makes it difficult to draw out a speculation on a release date.

However, Trusted Reviews stated that LG will likely release a new phone the same time as other companies.

New releases from Samsung and Sony are expected sometime in the first half of next year, so it's likely that LG will also make a release in that timeframe. The best bet, though, is between February and May 2016.

LG G5 is still in the rumor category and should be treated accordingly.
