It has been 12 years since the upcoming game's prequel, "Kingdom Hearts 2," made its debut. Fans have been clamoring for a new installment, and from the looks of it, they might get one toward the end of 2018. An investor's document, which is reportedly shared by the company, reveals the game titles expected to launch in the following years. "Kingdom Hearts 3" is among the latter.

Game director Tetsuya Nomura, in an interview with Famitsu, teases the game's current state. According to Nomura, it is far from being completed.

He tells the publication, "While I can't make a sweeping statement because the development process is different from what we've done so far, there are still worlds untouched. Production is progressing on unannounced worlds, in a state that we cannot show them off. In terms of the state of development, there is still some way to go."

For the uninitiated, "Kingdom Hearts 3" will be the 12th installment in the series. The upcoming title will conclude the Dark Seeker Saga. Joining the game protagonist Sora are Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey, and Riku. The group will be on a quest for the seven guardians of the light and the key to return hearts. It is up to them to defeat Master Xehanort and stop him from creating a second Keyblade war.

Rumor has it Square Enix will launch a trailer during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this year, which will take place on June 13–15.

Square Enix has yet to make an official announcement about the game's release date. If there is some truth to the leaked document, gamers should expect "Kingdom Hearts 3" to launch sometime next year.

"Kingdom Hearts 3" is slated to debut on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
