'Freaky Awesome' release date, news: New dungeon crawler game to come late October

Hideous mutants will give the players a surprise upon their deaths in "Freaky Awesome." Steam website

Fans of the "roguelike" gaming are in for an awesome October, as "Freaky Awesome," a rogue-lite indie roleplaying game (RPG) is set to arrive this month.

"Freaky Awesome," developed and published by Mandragora, is a hectic action game where players must explore a procedurally-generated factory riddled with weird monsters and deadly traps in order to find their missing dog. The catch is that toxic wastes in the factory will cause the player characters to mutate, giving them different powers every time.

Any killed enemies will also leave behind puddles of toxic waste that can heal the player, albeit also giving them a random mutation, even if they are engaged in the middle of a fight. This means that the players must adapt to the ever-changing game mechanics in order to survive the toxic factory. So, getting used to all the mutations is a crucial skill that players must utilize.

RPG elements are also present in the game. Players will be able to use objects in the game world as weapons and armor, and they will also be able to unlock, upgrade and level up the skills of their characters. The RPG can be played solo or with up to four friends via co-op.

The upcoming game is a rogue-lite, meaning it has the most important feature of the "roguelike" genre but is more lenient in its implementation of it. This said feature is the perma-death (permanent death) mechanic where players must restart the game whenever their characters die, essentially resetting all progress. "Freaky Awesome," on the other hand, allows the players to keep their progress (upgrades, items, and levels) although character death is still permanent.

PCGamesN likened the game to other "roguelikes" such as "The Binding of Isaac" and "Crawl," so players who enjoyed those two games will find a lot to like in "Freaky Awesome."

"Freaky Awesome" is set to be released on Oct. 18 for Microsoft Windows and will be available on Steam.
