'Far Cry 5' news: Upcoming game gets disturbing live-action trailer

"Far Cry 5" is pushing boundaries even farther with its latest trailer for a short film, as the new promotional video has made some controversial waves due to its portrayal of extremist cults.

The video in question is also a live-action short, which is one of the publisher's high-production-value marketing for the game since it is approaching release less than a month from now. The short film is titled Eden's Gate and serves as an introductory prologue for the game's antagonists, which is essentially a doomsday cult based in a fictional rural Montana in the game.

The full short film is also available in Amazon Prime, which is the company's online streaming service, much like Netflix. Since the short film is based on the game, the characters present in it will also be the same as those in the game, minus the expendable protagonists in the video though.

Based on the trailer for the short film, a group of journalists or undercover people try to infiltrate the initiation ceremony of Project at Eden's Gate, which is the full name of the cult. They were filming and spying on a violent baptismal rite led by the cult leader Joseph Seed (Greg Bryk in the short film) until they got caught, during which they had to scramble for their lives since the cult apparently will punish them harshly, perhaps even torture them for infiltrating.

Much like in the game, the short film will explore controversial themes such as religious extremism, private armies, torture and dangerous cults in the United States, where Eden's Gate is portrayed as a sadistic, tyrannical and land-grabbing cult with highly feudal and taboo-filled ceremonies and traditions. This was made more extreme by the psychotic nature of the cult leader, which serves as the main antagonist for the game and the short film.

Fans of the franchise or otherwise who are interested in the upcoming game, will do well to watch the introductory trailer to get a sense of what Eden's Gate of Hope County, Montana before "Far Cry 5" gets released on March 27 for the PC, PlayStation 4 (PS4) and the Xbox One.
