'Downton Abbey' season 6 premiere spoilers: First teaser trailer out

Downton Abbey PBS

The season 6 premiere of "Downton Abbey" is just a few weeks away, and the show has released an emotional teaser trailer which suggests the end of an era for the inhabitants of the castle.

In the trailer, Carson (Jim Carter) is seen packing his suitcase and removing his name on the door. He also sits on his bed and gives his bedspread a last pat.

"If I could stop history in its tracks maybe I would. But I can't Carson. Neither you nor I can hold back time," Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) says to the ever-faithful butler.

People are seen shutting the doors and windows of the castle and walking inside the almost empty space. A scene shows the servants dance in the kitchen.

Anna (Joanne Froggat) tells Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery), "We have had our moments, haven't we my lady?"

Lady Mary says, "We certainly have."

The last scenes of the trailer feature the family taking a last look at the castle, a man shutting the door, and a car driving away.

Season 6 will pick up in 1925, six months after the events in the season 5 finale, with the family being forced to let go some of the staff as a way to cope with the failing economy.

Speaking at the "Downton Abbey" panel at the Television Critics Association Summer Tour, Bonneville said that the show's sixth and final season sees Lord Grantham being forced to make a change.

"It's brought home to [the characters] when we go to visit a neighbor in the county who is literally having to sell the family silver...And the entire family sees that, and sees the writing on the wall," said Bonneville.

The cast revealed that they had several emotional moments while filming season 6, and Dockery said that she and Laura Carmichael "wandered around for the last time" during their final day shooting at the castle.

"We didn't want to leave. We went and sat on Matthew's bench," she said.

"And we had a good cry," Carmichael added.

The sixth and final season of "Downton Abbey" premieres in the U.K. on Sept. 20 on ITV, and will premiere in the U.S. on Jan. 3 on PBS.
