'Bourne 5' news: action scenes to be shot in Las Vegas

Earlier this month, Matt Damon won a Golden Globe for "The Martian" and on Thursday, Jan. 14, it was announced that the actor was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the film based on the novel by Andy Weir. But the actor is not resting on his laurels as Damon is hard at work filming the latest installment in the "Bourne" movie franchise.

Last month, Damon gave an update about "Bourne 5," telling Variety that they are almost "halfway through" filming the movie.

"We started in September but they're going dark for most of December and cutting basically the two acts," he explained.
Damon said that the movie will tell what happened to Jason Bourne over the past 12 years as he has been hiding since then.

"When this next one comes out in 2016, it will have been 12 years—in movie years—that the character has been off the grid. So what's happened in those intervening years give you a story," said Damon.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly that the film will find Bourne "in a dark and tortured place" as he continues to find answers about his past.

As for the film's location, the 45-year-old revealed to Variety that they shot a "nighttime riot scene" in Tenerife, which will stand in for Athens. Damon said that they also shot in England, Berlin, and Washington D.C. For the third act, the film will be going to Las Vegas.

KFTV reports that production will take place in the next couple of weeks in Las Vegas as "Bourne 5" films a key car chase sequence in the city. The shoot is expected to be a big boost to the city because despite its iconic status, the website says that Nevada struggles to attract long-term location filming due to its lack of a competitive tax incentive.

"Bourne 5" premieres in theaters July 29.
