'Bourne 5' to be about a 'post-Snowden world,' says Matt Damon

"Bourne 5" will see the return of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. The actor last played the iconic role in 2007's "The Bourne Ultimatum," and he recently gave a few hints of what's in store for fans in the upcoming film.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Damon said that he and director Paul Greengrass came up with a new story inspired by a recent, real-life political scandal, specifically about the fallout from the information that was revealed by Edward Snowden.

"Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know?" said the 44-year-old actor to the website.

Snowden made headlines in 2013 when he leaked classified information from the U.S. National Security Agency. The information uncovered many global surveillance programs, some of them run by the NSA. Senator John McCain even likened Snowden to Jason Bourne, having said back in 2013 that some Americans see him as the real-life version of the popular character.

The film will reportedly start production next week. As all of the "Bourne" movies usually take place in various parts of the world, fans can expect "Bourne 5" to be no different as the film will also be shooting in different locations worldwide. Damon said that the film will start in Greece.

"You know, the beginning of democracy," he said, adding that the movie will end in Las Vegas.

Joining Damon in the film is Julia Styles, who will reprise her role as agent Nicky Parsons, an ally of Bourne's. Styles appeared in the first three films of the franchise. As for new faces, it was reported that Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander will also be appearing in "Bourne 5." Sources told Variety that Jones will be playing a superior officer at the CIA, while Vikander's role is unknown at the moment.

"Bourne 5" is slated to premiere in July 2016.
