'Battlefield V' news: Next game rumored to be set in WWII

It looks like the developers of the "Battlefield" franchise are going back to their roots, as the upcoming "Battlefield V" will reportedly be set in World War II, much like the first game in the long-standing franchise.

A report from Venture Beat speaks of a Discord app leaker who apparently unveiled a developer build of the upcoming game. The said leaker is also a YouTuber named Drakesden and is actually known for revealing a lot of "Battlefield"- related information. Additionally, Venture Beat was also able to somehow verify the image independent of the Discord community.

As such, the website is confident that "Battlefield V" will be set in World War II, like the recent "Call of Duty: WWII." It is also worth noting that the "Battlefield" first-person shooter (FPS) franchise was actually sparked by "Battlefield 1942" back in 2002, which takes place during the height of the German invasion during World War II. It is possible that the game will be a recreation of the "1942" experience with updated graphics, sound and gameplay, though that remains to be seen and is too early to tell.

Even the name of the upcoming sequel "Battlefield V" could also still change into something more self-explanatory and not confusing, as the previous title is named "Battlefield 1," with the "1" standing for World War I and not the chronological order of the franchise. The said Discord leak also claims that the game will be following the German side exclusively, at least in the single-player aspect, meaning "Battlefield V" might not follow the usual World War II medium formula of following the Allies (United States, Great Britain, USSR) or "good guys."

Other rumor sources dispute this idea and claim that "Battlefield V's" campaign will most likely work similar to that of "Battlefield 1" in which multiple characters are used for exposition and side of the war is left out in terms of storytelling and exposure.

Lastly, "Battlefield V" will also reportedly have loot boxes, though players can rest assured since it will also apparently be for cosmetic purposes only and by no means affect gameplay advantages. Fans are advised to keep their eyes peeled for any new information regarding the supposed "Battlefield V."
