The planned "Bad Boys" spin-off may soon appear on network television.

Only a few days have passed since reports surfaced about a television spin-off series based on the movie "Bad Boys." In that few days, it has also been confirmed that a pilot commitment has been ordered by NBC and development of the spin-off will move ahead.

Variety has reported that the rights to the television pilot were secured by NBC, outbidding other networks for the property and thus securing the project. Although there are no reports on what the title of the still-in-development spin-off will be, network executives are hoping that Gabrielle Union can channel the successful vibe of the movie franchise and translate it to TV ratings.

Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis will both be serving as writers and executive producers of the show alongside "Bad Boys" film producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Other details about the show are also starting to surface. Union's character, Sydney Burnett, has left Miami and moved to Los Angeles after a successful career as DEA agent. She is partnered with Nancy McKenna who thinks that Burnett may be hiding something else and becomes concerned for her and their work as LAPD detectives.

This character concept seems like a throwback to the odd-couple dynamics in "Bad Boys." If that's the case, it could be a gender-switched TV version of the film franchise and could potentially capture the same feel as the movies.

It can be remembered that Sydney appeared in "Bad Boys II" as Martin Lawrence's sister. Her introduction in the film was not only to create friction between the characters of Lawrence and Will Smith but she also served a powerful female character.

Not only was Union's character able to hold her own against the male leads, but she was also instrumental in bringing down the Russian mafia and the Cuban drug cartel.
