'13 Reasons Why' season 2 renewal or cancellation: Writers working on season 2?

Will Netflix renew "13 Reasons Why" for season 2? Facebook/13ReasonsWhy

Netflix is reportedly on the verge of renewing "13 Reasons Why" for its sophomore season.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals the online streaming service provider could possibly renew the controversial show for another season based on the claims of several sources, caliming the writers are already conceptualizing the plot of season 2 for several weeks already.

The show was initially meant as a miniseries, but fans of the show gained numerous requests from fans to have a second season to tie up some loose ends, including the life-or-death situation of Alex Standall (Miles Heizer), as well as the result of the lawsuit filed by Hannah's parents against her school.

The teen drama series was developed by Brian Yorkey for TV from author Jay Asher's novel titled "Thirteen Reasons Why." It centers on the story of a young high school student named Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) who kills herself and records the reasons why she committed suicide in several cassette tapes to be heard by the individuals who had a hand in her downfall.

The series touches on several controversial topics like teen suicide, high school bullying, as well as sexual assault. But it earned a lot of criticism because of its very graphic depiction of suicide.

However, writer Nic Sheff explained the need to feature the details of Hannah's suicide in a guest post on Vanity Fair.

According Sheff, he was surprised to see several suicide prevention advocates express concern about the theme of the show. He believes that to address the problem of teen suicide, the society must deal with it head-on.

"It overwhelmingly seems to me that the most irresponsible thing we could've done would have been not to show the death at all. In AA, they call it playing the tape: encouraging alcoholics to really think through in detail the exact sequence of events that will occur after relapse," the writer stated. "It's the same thing with suicide. To play the tape through is to see the ultimate reality that suicide is not a relief at all — it's a screaming, agonizing, horror."

Netflix has yet to make the announcement regarding the second season renewal of "13 Reasons Why."
