Tim Tebow's choice to remain celibate should be respected, Daily Orange writer says

Tim Tebow made headlines last year when it was reported that he broke up with Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo allegedly because the former NFL Quarterback wanted to remain celibate until marriage.

Back in October, it was reported that the two began dating a few months after Culpo ended her relationship with Nick Jonas. Toward the end of November, it was reported that they split, and while both parties never confirmed or denied that they dated, Tebow became the subject of numerous jokes among several media outlets and sports blogs shortly after the breakup rumors emerged.

One sports personality who gave his take on the issue is Jerry Thornton, a sports radio co-host on the "Dale & Holley Show" and author of the Thornography blog. On his blog, Thornton said that while he respected Tebow's Christian beliefs, he said that the football star handled his relationship with Culpo like he handles most NFL pass rushes, "by dropping the ball." Thornton added that he thinks God did not create Culpo to be sent "love letters and cute notes" to and that "she has needs."

Daily Orange writer Elaina Crockett pointed out that Thornton's comments on the issue are indicative of the way modern culture views gender and sexual behavior. She went on to say that just because Tebow is an athlete, he shouldn't be perceived as overtly sexual because of his celebrity status and that people should not assume that because of it he has access to sexual partners.

Moreover, Crockett added that Culpo's attractiveness does not mean that she has insatiable sexual urges as Thornton said, and that typecasting Culpo as the "bad girl" is extremely sexist because some critics are "treating her as if her entire existence weighs on her level of attractiveness."

Crockett went on to say that Tebow's choice to remain celibate should be respected because his vow to remain a virgin until marriage is rooted in his Christian faith, and that even if the NFL Quarterback remained celibate for non-religious reasons, this should be honored and not used against him.
