The "System Shock" reboot remains shocking as ever for fans, as developers have released a progress video containing gameplay footage for the upcoming game.
Nightdive Studios, the reboot's developers, have uploaded the early gameplay footage on YouTube, complete with developer commentary. Much of the difficulty of the developers in the reboot was replicating the game's atmosphere since the original "System Shock" was released back in 1994 with visuals that barely resemble 3D graphics. This, however, did not stop the game from gaining much repute, and it was even crowned as one of the best horror games in existence, giving a Nightdive a tall order to fulfill.
Still, the constant flow of crowdsourced funding that the indie developers have been receiving could be proof that the game is shaping up to be a competent reboot of the original. The reboot sees the game getting translated into modern graphics technology, where the 2D and 3D texture sprites of the original have been replaced with actual specular and volumetric lighting and high-resolution textures. These elements work together to reproduce "System Shock's" eerie and ominous atmosphere, where every corner and corridor could be the players' last.
The players, however, will not be helpless in their journey, as they will be able to fight grotesque mutants in the game, often in a visceral fashion. The developers in the video have also proudly flaunted their "shatter tech" system which lets players smash frozen mutants to pieces along with a dismemberment physics system which lets players kill mutants using a variety of styles.
"System Shock" is one of the most critically acclaimed first-person shooter (FPS) games of its time and has since spawned a cult following. The FPS is about a nameless hacker getting caught during his infiltration of a space station in the year 2072. He is then placed in a coma and woken up after six months. He soon finds out that SHODAN, the station's artificial intelligence (AI), has taken control of the entire place and wreaked havoc on it. Players must then stop SHODAN from destroying all the major cities on Earth using the space station.
No exact or intended release date has been announced for the reboot yet, but the developers are open to donations via the game reboot's official website.
